Mahmud A. Asrar’s Women of Marvel series
My question, right, my question is
When we have so many awesome lady superheroes
Many of whom are reasonably well known to the general public
Why are we getting movies about fucking Ant-Man?
Has anyone even heard of this guy before? Is he some super iconic hero and I’ve entirely missed it?
And even is he is, okay. So I just checked wikipedia, and I know that’s not a super reliable source and it’s possible that the exact numbers may vary slightly, but I don’t think they’d vary enough to make my point invalid. And my point is that according to this entry, since 1944 there have been 30 films based on Marvel comics released to date. Of this, there were:
21 in which the title hero was male
7 about a group of superheroes (mostly consisting of men)
1 in which the title hero was female
One film. ONE. IN 67 YEARS. And that is just live action films that have already come out. Animated films? All about men. Films that planned to come out in the future? ALL ABOUT MEN.
Is it really too much to ask that we get a film about, say, Black Widow? Or an origins movie about one of the female Xmen? Or any lady hero at all? Really, is that too much to ask?
so today is the day of people on my tumblr dash talking about issues that are super close to my heart and being 100% on my side and I - I don’t think I can handle how much love I am feeling right now for the internet
aka
YES
WHERE IS MY FUCKING BLACK WIDOW MOVIE, ANT MAN CAN SUCK MY DICK. I want a she-hulk movie, a storm movie, a black cat movie, a jubilee movie, an elsa bloodstone movie, a tabitha movie
I want superhero movies about ladies. I mean, fuck knows there are basically a million lady superheroes and the comics about lady superheroes (hello there, wonder woman, batwoman, supergirl, birds of prey, batgirl, huntress) sure do seem to be selling well???? and even the superhero cartoons (sup young justice, teen titans) include actual lady superheroes who are amazing and gorgeous and viewers clearly like them
but oh dear lord no surely we can’t put them in movies!! and ESPECIALLY not as the star!!!!!! even if they’re more well-known and are legit pop culture icons (HELLO THERE WONDER WOMAN) than some of the dude heroes getting their own films these days
seriously. ant man. jesus fuck, go eat a dick. and someone go make a birds of prey movie, it would kick all the ass in the world.
speaking of actual data though, I was thinking about the DC and Marvel films that have lady superheroes as the actual star, and I came up with….okay, so there’s that Catwoman film that came out a while ago that seemed to have nothing to do with catwoman, and Elektra, and ok I never read any of those comics so I have no idea about that one and won’t say a bad word about it….and that’s where I can’t think of anything else. that’s it. please tell me I’m just forgetting things, guys, because there seriously has to be more than two lady superhero films ever.
^^^ Yes to all of these things
Also, as a point of interest, there is a Black Widow movie rumored for 2013 on Movie Insider. But I wouldn’t get your hopes up. It is just a rumor, and we all know how female superhero movie and TV shows seem to fall through a lot easier. But still: light at the end of the tunnel!
If they make it, I just hope it’s good. Not just because I want a good superlady movie, but because the few other superlady movies have been utter crap. The more crap superheroine movies they put out, the more likely they are to not make them. Or to continue to make them fanservice heavy and quality light. That way, when it flops, they can say “Oh, superwoman movies don’t make as much money, trololol,” and completely ignore the fact that they made a crappy movie.
not only are there zero female super movies out there, but the characters we do get in movies are typically oversexualized to the fucking max, or have their personalities compromised by the ridiculous expectation for Boy-Gets-Girl plotlines. I loved Thor, and I loved Jane, and I loved that he kissed her hand before returning to Asgard because I thought, man that is classy as fuck, they can be buddies like Thor and Sif sorta deal— and then my entire screen was filled with the two of them nomming each other’s faces. can we fucking have a male/female relationship that isn’t about them wanting to jump each other’s bones constantly/in mad super love? after knowing them for three days tops?
or how about canonly non-heterosexual characters, such as Mystique, who get that part of their persona completely glossed over and are humping a different guy’s leg in each film with no mention or hint of them batting for the other team? where the fuck are my lesbians at?
/flips all the tables
I’ve been wondering the same thing for a while now about Mystique. I mean, sure. I know that Steve and Tony aren’t going to go after each other in the Avengers movie. I know they’re never going to explore the completely obvious to everyone sexual chemistry between Charles and Erik in X-Men: First Class. But for a character like Mystique, who is at least canonically bisexual, they can’t explore that at all?
LOVE IT.. !! :3
:( Poor Ant-Man. Actually quite a lot of people like him, particularly his Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes incarnation. Plus I’m sure the Ant-Man movie will have Wasp/Janet in it. And Wasp is incredibly popular lately because of the cartoon. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say she’s the most popular character on the show.
We don’t have any female superhero movies because Catwoman and Elektra screwed us over. Blame the movie studios. Hopefully the Black Widow movie does well and will change people’s perspective on female superheroes. I think Wonder Woman never got greenlit because the studio was afraid they’d have another Catwoman fiasco on their hands. Her poor TV show never got a chance either, unfortunately.
And for those who have issue with female superheroes being oversexualized, blame comic book artists for doing that, too. A look at most comic book art will show you.
Also, what really bugs me is Sue Storm, the soccer mom of the Marvel universe was played by Jessica Alba, of all people, and was such a blatant sex symbol it was sad. Funny thing is, Alba hated the way they made her character act as well. We need a rebooted Fantastic Four movie where Sue is played by someone sensible.
(And whoever said Emma Frost was on here was wrong. I sincerely hope they didn’t confuse Dazzler for Emma.)
